A competition-winning scheme for a new footbridge over the Rochdale Canal. The bridge connects three crossing points in the context of the historic canal side warehouses of Ancoats and a new urban village, New Islington.
Client: Urban Splash
Architects: Gollifer Langston Architects
Project Value: £500,000
New Islington Footbridge, Manchester

The air-draught for canal traffic precluded structure beneath the bridge deck. Thus the primary bridge structure comprises a prismatic truss set above and to one side of the super-slim deck. The truss is fabricated from hollow section steelwork and clad with laser cut steel sheet with a motif reminiscent of woven fabric and ripples on the canal.
